Biography, research:
Dr. Ummey Shameem is a Professor of Zoology, Andhra University at Visakhapatnam, India. Her doctoral thesis was on Digenean parasites of fishes from Chilka Lake, Odisha under an ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) project. Chilika Lake, the second largest lagoon in the world supports large fishery resources hosts 160 species of migratory birds and was designated the first Indian wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.As a post doctoral fellow of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Dr. Shameem investigated Schistosome parasites of domesticated animals. She joined University as a faculty member in 1990 and established a laboratory to carry out studies on fish diseases including microbial and parasitic infections. Dr. Shameem’s studies included fish immunology in particular to enhance the resistance capacity of fish utilizing indigenous herbal extracts. Molecular studies of fish parasites, especially pathogenic ectoparasites like Monogenoidea which are of economic importance in aquaculture and on DNA Barcoding of Monogenoidean parasites of marine fishes from North Coastal Andhra Pradesh are in progress. These results are embodied in 20 peer reviewed papers. She mentored 7 Ph.D and 12 M.Phil scholars and currently extended her investigations on bacterial diseases of freshwater fishes from culture ponds of Andhra Pradesh, India.
