Biography, research:
Dr. C. Kalavati obtained a Masters degree in zoology with Parasitology as a special subject and a PhD in Protozoology at Andhra University, India in 1972. For her PhD she specialised in gregarines, Microsporidian parasites. As a post Doc and later she contributed significantly to the study of Myxozoans. Starting as a parasitologist Dr. Kalavati developed an interest in free-living ciliates, flagellates and other associated planktonic protists. For the last 30 years, she has worked on various groups of protistans in this area. Classical taxonomy has always been her subject of choice. She is an author/co-author of over 100 scientific papers, and supervised 12 PhD and 6 M.Phil students. Currently she actively participates in 2 major research programmes namely, Studies on Myxozoan parasites of fishes with Dr. Mackenzie, Aberdeen University, Aberdeen and A European commission funded project on Ciliates as Natural reservoirs of pathogenic Bacteria (CINARPATHOBACTER) with Dr. G.Petroni, University of Pisa Italy.
